English lessons are taught in ability groups across the school and are linked to our main Topic focus for that half term so that the children can immerse themselves in a genre and specific content.
Our English planning follows three week teaching units in the teaching sequence which covers a range of genres. The first week is a reading week linked to the main Topic with ambitious choice of texts from classic and modern literature or non-fiction. In the second week, the children start to deconstruct and then reconstruct texts as well as focusing on grammar needed for that writing purpose. In the final week the children plan and then write their own version of the genre, edit and improving as the week progresses and are encouraged to be continuously mindful of audience and purpose and to challenge their ability.
We develop our children's vocabulary across the school by carefully choosing 'Star Words' for each topic area for the children to learn and then apply in their writing and conversations.
