Bienvenue! At High Ash, children begin learning French in Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6) through the engaging Kapow scheme of work. Lessons are fun and interactive, using songs, rhymes, role play and games to bring the language to life.
Our French curriculum aims to instil a love of language learning and an appreciation of other cultures. We want pupils to develop the confidence to communicate in French for practical purposes, using both spoken and written language. The scheme is carefully designed to provide a strong foundation for future language learning, while also deepening understanding of English grammar and opening up opportunities for study and work in other countries later in life.
Learning is structured around three key knowledge strands — phonics, vocabulary and grammar — which are applied through the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. In Year 3/4, the focus is mainly on oral skills, with written French gradually introduced throughout the year. Pronunciation is taught explicitly. All lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will be able to:
- Engage in purposeful dialogue in real-life situations (e.g. ordering food, asking for directions).
- Speak, read and write simple texts with confidence and accurate pronunciation.
- Use strategies such as recognising cognates and applying grammar rules to understand and construct language.
- Demonstrate understanding of spoken French through active listening and appropriate responses.
- Apply their skills to other languages in the future.
- Through this approach, we ensure pupils meet the National Curriculum expectations for Languages and leave High Ash as confident, curious learners with a lifelong love of languages.
