Computing
Computing skills are a cornerstone in fostering ambition, confidence, creativity, and independence in our learners. At High Ash, we strive to give children every opportunity to succeed in computing. As pupils progress through our school, they will develop robust computing knowledge and skills, alongside a stronger understanding of online safety and how to protect themselves in digital environments.
We encourage our children to engage with and value the computing curriculum, always asking why they are learning—not just how. We want them to reflect on, discuss, and appreciate how computing enhances their learning, development, and wellbeing. Achieving a healthy balance with technology is key to effective education and a fulfilling lifestyle.
By the end of Year Six, children will understand:
-
Computer Science: the heart of computing—understanding information and computation, digital systems, and applying this knowledge through programming.
-
Information Technology: practical application—using IT to create programs, systems, and diverse content.
-
Digital Literacy: expressing ideas, using and creating with technology in a way that prepares them for the future workplace.
-
Online Safety: recognising and articulating the risks of being online, and knowing how to stay safe.
-
Computing Vocabulary & Independence: confidently using coding terminology and independently accessing and using age-appropriate software and tools across all key stages.
At High Ash, we empower our children not just to navigate the digital world, but to excel within it. Building upon foundations drawn from subjects like Maths, Science, and Design Technology, learners are encouraged to explore computing systems and understand how they interact. Given the rapid evolution of technology, our curriculum ensures pupils become digitally literate learners who are equipped to adapt, overcome challenges, make informed choices, and integrate new learning, all in preparation for a future shaped by constant innovation.
We believe our learners should demonstrate:
-
Competence in coding for practical and creative purposes, including cross-subject applications.
-
Safe, respectful, lawful, and ethical online communication.
-
Awareness of the interconnected nature of digital devices.
-
The ability to communicate ideas effectively using technology across the curriculum.
-
Skill in collecting, organising, and manipulating data.
We will continue to adapt and enhance our curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of all learners, including those with disabilities, ensuring every child at High Ash thrives in a digitally rich and inclusive learning environment.
