History at High Ash
At High Ash, we aim to inspire a lifelong curiosity about the past, empowering children to understand their place in the world and appreciate how history shapes our present. Through an engaging, carefully sequenced curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum and enriched by Kapow History resources, our learners leave each topic with a deep sense of identity, community, and global awareness.
Our approach combines strong substantive knowledge with rigorous historical enquiry skills, ensuring children do not just learn about history—they learn how to think like historians.
Our Approach
-
Chronological Frameworks & Context: Children build a secure, interconnected mental timeline from ancient civilisations and local history through to modern times, developing a clear grasp of how key periods, empires, and events fit together.
-
Disciplinary Enquiry & Source Analysis: Through unit enquiry questions, children actively interrogate primary and secondary sources, evaluate artefacts, analyse historical interpretations, and explore cause, consequence, and continuity over time.
-
Enriched & Cross-Curricular Learning: History lessons are enriched with meaningful links to geography, art, literacy, and computing, helping children make connections across subjects while supporting long-term knowledge retention.
-
Inclusive Scaffolding & High Challenge: Lessons are designed to be accessible to all learners. Scaffolded tasks, visual models, sentence stems, and accessible vocabulary banks ensure every child—including those with SEND—can access high-level learning and make optimal progress.
-
Clear Progression & Consistency: Our structured spiral framework ensures clear progression across year groups, constantly recapping and building upon prior knowledge, key concepts, and historical vocabulary to give teachers the clarity to deliver consistently high-quality history teaching.
