maths
At High Ash, we provide pupils with a high-quality mathematics education that helps them explore and understand the world around them. By using a range of mastery approaches, we encourage fluency, spark curiosity, and build confidence.
TEACHING FOR MASTERY
At High Ash, we follow a mastery approach so children gain a deep and lasting understanding of maths, not just quick methods. We focus on building strong understanding, using clear mathematical language, and encouraging every child to think like a mathematician. From Reception to Year 6, children move from hands-on resources, to pictures, and then to numbers and symbols. This step-by-step journey helps them see how maths connects to real life.
Our Curriculum
We use the White Rose Maths scheme to structure our daily lessons. This ensures small-step progression, regular revisiting of key knowledge, and opportunities to apply learning to rich, deep problems.
Early Years (fOUNDAtion)
In the Early Years, maths is taught through play and exploration, following the EYFS Framework. Children develop early number sense through six key areas:
- Cardinality and counting
- Comparison
- Composition
- Pattern
- Shape and space
- Measures
In Foundation children also take part in the DfE’s Mastering Number Programme (NCETM), with daily maths lessons and an additional 15-minute session focused on number fluency.
Key STAGE 1 & KEY STAGE 2
From Year 1 onwards, pupils have:
- A daily maths lesson (up to 1 hour)
- A mental maths session (up to 20 minutes), using:
- Mastering Number (KS1)
- Number Talks (KS2)
Lessons are planned and delivered using our What Good Teaching at High Ash is, which is grounded in Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction. This includes:
- Daily review of prior learning
- Small-step instruction with clear modelling
- Guided practice followed by independent work
- Regular checks for understanding and feedback
This structured approach ensures all pupils build secure mathematical foundations and are challenged to reason and solve problems with confidence.
